Modern Day Malinche derives it’s name from the Mexican historical figure, La Malinche. There are some in the Mexican culture who consider La Malinche a whore and traitor to her people, after translating for and becoming Hernan Cortez’ lover. As a result of her sexual encounters with Cortez, she bore a child – the first mestizo (of Spanish and Aztec blood) of the new world, thus resulting in La Malinche’s identity as the mother of the mestizo race (from which many Mexicans and Mexican-American’s now descend from). La Malinche continues to be used as an insult, as a way to assert power over women much in the same ways as other female historical figures (think Mary Magdalene, Jezebel, etc…).
